Michigan Interlock Device Tips Reminder

  • Do not eat during or 15 minutes prior to taking a breath sample.

  • Do not leave your car unattended while it is running or the key is turned over.

  • Keep the device out of direct sunlight for long periods of time.

  • Do not attempt to circumvent the device - this is illegal and will be logged as a major violation.

  • Do not tear, cut, mutilate, bang, tamper, or let the device, cords, or wires get wet.

  • Be sure to notify us PRIOR to taking your vehicle in for any maintenance work, towing, battery changes, or jumps done to your vehicle. You can notify us during our business hours (9:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday through Friday). Any receipts for work done on your vehicle must be faxed to the Secretary of State at 517-335-2190.

  • If you fail a test, the device will have a three (3) minute countdown before asking you for a retest. You must continue to provide a new breath sample until you pass.

  • Do not disconnect the device from its cord. You may remove the mouthpiece to clean it with hot water ONLY. Make sure the mouthpiece is completely dry before inserting it back into the device.

  • If you miss or fail a test, the Michigan Secretary of State has advised that you
refer to the order granting your restricted driving privileges for your specific requirements. Documentation must be sent to the Secretary of State

    MDOS-BAIIDdocumentation@michigan.govPlease include your full name,
driver's license number, date of birth, and vehicle ID as given to you by
    Nationwide Interlock.

  • Avoid using or storing anything in your vehicle which contains alcohol or ethanol ingredients, which may register a failed test with your device. Some examples of these products include hand sanitizer, mouthwash, perfume/cologne, gas
    containers, and liquid/spray air freshener.

* If you fail or miss a retest, pull over and turn the vehicle off if possible. This will allow the device to complete its temporary lockout and for you to take another test. Call the Reporting Department at

1-800-437-2437 Ext 6 immediately to notify them of the incident *
